Printed material, a chronology: bulletins, artists' publications, invitations & emphemera, 1968-2013
Notes to the catalogue
Introduction
Art & Project is mostly known by their Art & Project Bulletins. Between 1968 and 1989 the gallery published 156 Bulletins of which only one (the legendary number 24 by Daniel Buren) has not been published in a material form but only 'exists' as a conceptual art work. Besides the Bulletins Adriaan van Ravesteijn and Geert van Beijeren also sent many invitations, announcements and other printed material, from the start of the gallery in 1968 until the 90s.
This catalogue is the first attempt to publish a list of all of this material, including the Bulletins. These publications are presented in a chronological order, from 1968 to the present, and have been given an unique reference number, for example: 1968-1. The chronological list will hopefully give more insight into the sequence of the gallery's different types of publications and activities.
Five categories have been made to name the different kinds of printed material:
Bulletin
Publication
Invitation
Announcement
Postcard
Stationary
All measurements are in centimetres, first the height then the width.
Uncertain dates are shown in square brackets.
Bulletin
Bulletins are numbered 1 to 156, from September 1968 till November 1989. To date a single Bulletin and a related exhibition is not always easy because they did not always appear in a logical sequence or lacked specific dates. Not all exhibitions were accompanied by a Bulletin, and not all Bulletins were accompanied by an exhibition, and some Bulletins were a exhibition. But there are some usefull references. The first overview of Bulletins was published by the gallery on the occasion of the presentation of the first 62 issues at the Cologne Art Fair in 1972. This Catalogue of our Bulletins (nr. 1972-22) contains exhibition dates but also the mailing dates. The second self published list of Bulletins appeared in 1997 as an inventory of all Bulletins (nr. 1997-1) but here were given only rough exhibition and publication dates. So, for the first 62 issues the mailing dates were taken for the publication dates. Bulletins are also described here.
Publication
This category includes publications published by Art & Project or in collaboration with Art & Project. A full list of these publications can also be accessed here.
Invitation and Announcements
From 1968 till the 90s invitations and announcements appeared in the traditional Art & Project lay out, the A4-format of 29.7 x 21 cm. Nr. 1983-11 is the first announcement card in another format, 10.5 x 15 cm. In 1991 the joint gallery with Van Krimpen shows another format, 21 x 10 cm. In 1994 the format again changed, now to 15 x 10.5 cm, but next to the 10.5 x 15 cm-format. A list of exhibitions can be found here.
Postcards
Postcards were sometimes published as an spinn-off of invitations cards, e.g. 1993-6 and 1993-7, were the same invitation card for an exhibition of works by Han Schuil was used for a postcard.
Stationary
As stationary can hardly be seen as official publication material, here just a small selection has been made. Typographically, this material fits nicely with the general design the gallery used for many years.
